Where Did We Come From?
Tyler Stanley, technician and owner, worked at Sew Portland on Warren Ave. in Portland,ME where he repaired machines and managed the store since its inception in 2007. Sew Portland was owned by Kathy Stanley (yes, she's Tyler's mom), who lives in Lamoine, Maine and also is the owner/operator of Sewing by the Sea in Trenton, Maine. Sewing by the Sea has been serving sewing enthusiasts in Downeast Maine since 1994.
After it became impractical for Kathy to continue owning 2 stores in opposite corners of the State, Sew Portland closed and Tyler looked to find a small space where he could continue to repair machines. And in particular, continue the service commitments to customers who had purchased new PFAFF and Husqvarna Viking machines at Sew Portland.
In the winter of 2016, The Sewing Machine Exchange opened its doors in a small location on Route One in Falmouth. Starting mainly as a repair shop, the customer base grew quickly and so did the sales of new sewing machines. After 3 years The Sewing Machine Exchange had outgrown its location and relocated to The Pine Tree Shopping Center in the Spring of 2019.
